Armagh Guitar Tuition is run by David Murphy. An accomplished musician of over 30 years, he first started playing guitar at 12 years old. David started teaching guitar in 1994 and has continued until present having taught hundreds of students over the past 20 years.
His teaching style is informal with a strong emphasis on imparting his passion for the guitar and music in general. Lessons are always customised to suit each student in terms of their ability and where possible tailored to appeal to their taste and style of music.
Lessons should be enjoyable. Work – yes, but enjoyable work. Where possible, actual songs are used to introduce and teach new techniques and theory rather than abstract exercises. This helps make the learning more relevant and applicable.
From his teaching studio just outside Waringstown, students can learn both acoustic and electric guitar in wide variety of styles including Pop, Rock, Folk, Jazz and Blues. Plectrum and fingerstyle playing are both taught. Rhythm and lead playing are also covered. He also teaches Bass guitar to an intermediate level.
David is a member of the Registry Of Guitar Tutors, the principal organisation for teachers of guitar in the UK and Ireland. You can find out more information at the RGT website.
Early influences on his style include Peter Green, Mark Knopfler, Steve Lukather and Chet Atkins. Later and present influences include Tommy Emmanuel, Larry Carlton and Stevie Ray Vaughan. He is also a specialist in teaching the finger style of Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits.
